Status: Resolved (precautionary). On February 16, 2018, Carnivore Meat Company (Green Bay, WI) voluntarily recalled one lot of Vital Essentials Freeze-Dried Beef Nibblets Entrée for Dogs (Lot #20418, Best By February 4, 2019, package size 1 lb) after Connecticut Department of Agriculture retail sampling detected Salmonella. The recall covered a single production lot; no consumer illnesses (animal or human) were reported. The event was the first of two Vital Essentials 2018 recalls under the Salmonella detection thread (April 2018 Beef Toppers / Frozen Beef Chub followed). Distinct from the Vital Essentials 2016 Listeria recall already covered in the encyclopedia.

What was recalled

On February 16, 2018, Carnivore Meat Company voluntarily recalled one production lot of Vital Essentials Freeze-Dried Beef Nibblets Entrée for Dogs. Affected: Lot #20418, Best By date February 4, 2019, 1-lb resealable bag (UPC 33211 00807). The trigger was Connecticut Department of Agriculture retail sampling that detected Salmonella in finished product. Carnivore Meat Company published the formal recall through the FDA Recalls archive at FDA Recalls archive.

Vital Essentials is a freeze-dried raw pet food brand emphasizing single-ingredient products. The freeze-drying process is intended to reduce moisture content to a level inhibitory to bacterial growth, but freeze-drying is not a reliable kill step for Salmonella — the process reduces moisture but does not raise temperature to lethality. Manufacturers using freeze-drying rely on supplier qualification (USDA-inspected meat sourcing) and environmental monitoring to manage pathogen load. The February 2018 single-lot detection at Vital Essentials reflects either a supplier-level Salmonella contamination that survived freeze-drying, or a production-line environmental cross-contamination event. The April 2018 follow-on recall (covered separately) of Beef Toppers and Frozen Beef Chub suggests the contamination source was not fully resolved by the February recall’s corrective action.

Why it was recalled

Connecticut Department of Agriculture (CTDA) retail sampling is one of the more active state-level pet food surveillance programs in the United States. CTDA has been the source of multiple raw pet food Salmonella detections, including the 2026 Raaw Energy 8-of-8 event and several other small-brand detections. The 2018 Vital Essentials event reflects the surveillance program working as designed: routine state-level sampling at retail catches contamination that may have passed manufacturer-level testing or arose from supplier-level sourcing issues. The single-lot scope of the February 2018 Vital Essentials recall suggests the contamination was contained to one specific production batch rather than reflecting a facility-level harborage point; however, the April 2018 follow-on Salmonella event at Vital Essentials raises the possibility that the underlying root cause persisted across both events.

Carnivore Meat Company corrective actions post-recall included supplier qualification review and finished-product testing protocol enhancement. The structural reality for freeze-dried raw pet food: without a kill step in production, the only barriers to Salmonella are upstream supplier quality and downstream environmental monitoring. Brands offering HPP or freeze-drying with additional high-temperature processing have lower retail-sampling pathogen-detection rates than freeze-drying alone.

Health risks for your pet

No consumer illnesses (animal or human) were reported in connection with the February 2018 Vital Essentials recall. Had affected product reached dogs, Salmonella infection presents as diarrhea (sometimes bloody), vomiting, fever, anorexia, lethargy, typically self-limited in healthy adult dogs but more severe in puppies, seniors, and immunocompromised animals. The zoonotic human-handling risk is the primary concern: dogs infected with Salmonella shed the bacteria in stool for weeks after clinical recovery, and humans handling raw freeze-dried pet food face direct exposure during feeding, food prep surface cleaning, and pet waste cleanup. CDC and FDA jointly recommend washing hands after handling pet food regardless of recall status. Pregnant women, infants, the elderly, and immunocompromised adults face elevated Salmonella severe-disease risk.

What to do if you bought affected product

All recalled Vital Essentials Freeze-Dried Beef Nibblets Entrée (Lot #20418, Best By Feb 4, 2019) has expired Best By dates; no household pantry should still contain recalled product. If you fed Vital Essentials Freeze-Dried Beef Nibblets in February-March 2018 and your dog developed Salmonella-consistent illness, the timing aligned with this recall. Current Vital Essentials production operates under post-2018 supplier qualification and finished-product testing protocols. Pet owners feeding any freeze-dried or raw pet food should follow strict handling-hygiene protocols: separate utensils for raw pet food, immediate handwashing after handling, no cross-contamination with human food prep surfaces. Pregnant women, infants, the elderly, and immunocompromised adults in households feeding raw pet food face elevated Salmonella risk and should avoid handling the food directly.

How this affects KibbleIQ’s grade

Vital Essentials beef liver freeze-dried treats are in the KibbleIQ scored database; we score Vital Essentials products on their current ingredient lists per our published methodology. The 2018 Salmonella event was a single-lot precautionary recall triggered by state-level surveillance; no consumer illnesses were reported. Vital Essentials has a documented multi-event recall pattern: 2016 Listeria (covered separately), February 2018 Salmonella (this event), and April 2018 Salmonella (covered separately) — three events in approximately 30 months. Recall-history scoring under methodology v2 will weight repeat-detection patterns as part of a brand-level reliability profile; three precautionary single-lot detections without consumer illness is qualitatively different from three confirmed-illness events but still indicates a pathogen-management posture that warrants scrutiny relative to brands with clean recall histories. For now, our recommendation: read both our current Vital Essentials review AND this page when evaluating the brand.
