The first five ingredients are all grains or plant proteins: brewers rice, brown rice, oat groats, corn gluten meal, and wheat gluten. Chicken by-product meal finally appears at position six as the sole animal protein source. Corn gluten meal and wheat gluten are concentrated plant proteins — they exist to inflate the protein percentage on the label without the cost of actual meat.

The good stuff
Dried chicory root provides inulin, a natural prebiotic fiber that supports beneficial gut bacteria — meaningful for a breed with digestive sensitivities. Corn gluten meal and wheat gluten are the most concerning entries. These are concentrated plant protein isolates used specifically to boost the crude protein number on the guaranteed analysis without adding quality animal protein. The combination means a substantial portion of the “protein” in this food comes from corn and wheat, not chicken. The only animal protein is chicken by-product meal — rendered parts including heads, feet, and intestines. For Miniature Schnauzers, the breed most genetically predisposed to pancreatitis of any dog breed, the quality and digestibility of every ingredient matters. A formula built on six grains and plant proteins before any meat arrives is a questionable foundation.
