What's actually in Orijen Puppy?
We analyzed Orijen Puppy (the flagship biologically appropriate puppy formula from Champion Petfoods). The first five ingredients are chicken, turkey, chicken liver, salmon, and whole herring.
Five animal ingredients before any carbohydrate is unusual — most puppy formulas include at least one grain or legume in the top five. Chicken and turkey cover poultry amino acids; chicken liver is a nutrient-dense organ meat (taurine, iron, B vitamins, vitamin A); salmon and whole herring deliver marine omega-3s (EPA and DHA) that whole-food puppy formulas rarely match. This is the WholePrey model in practice — meat, organ, and bone in the ratio they'd occur in a wild animal.
The carbohydrate anchor is whole red lentils and whole pinto beans (position 11+), delivering low-glycemic-index carbs, fiber, and plant protein. The legume load is legitimate nutritional content at Orijen's lower inclusion rate, but DCM-susceptible breed owners (goldens, cockers, Dobermans) should still flag it with their vet. Orijen publishes glycemic-index and carbohydrate data on its label for transparency — rare in the industry. Shop on Amazon →
The good stuff
The protein density is exceptional. Orijen markets 85% animal ingredients by weight, with fresh, raw, and dehydrated meat and organ combined. Puppies between 8 weeks and 12 months have amino acid requirements roughly 2x adult maintenance — they're building muscle, organ tissue, skeletal structure, and nervous system rapidly. Orijen Puppy's formulation reflects that reality. Named animal sources across chicken, turkey, salmon, herring, sardine, plus organ meats (liver, heart, giblets) means amino acid coverage is essentially complete.
Salmon and herring deliver dedicated DHA for brain and retinal development — Orijen includes pollock oil separately as a supplemental omega-3 source. DHA is the single most evidence-backed nutrient for puppy cognitive development (multiple controlled studies show improved trainability and learning), and Orijen Puppy provides it from multiple bioavailable sources.
Natural mineral sourcing. Rather than relying heavily on synthetic zinc oxide or iron sulfate, Orijen sources most calcium and phosphorus from bone content (chicken/turkey giblets and dehydrated whole-animal ingredients). This produces the bioavailable chelated forms that puppies absorb more efficiently. Supplemental zinc proteinate and copper proteinate fill gaps.
Five-strain probiotic blend (Bacillus coagulans in the main list; additional Lactobacillus species in expanded formulations) supports gut development during the critical first 6 months of microbiome establishment. Functional botanicals — turmeric, sarsaparilla root, althea root, rosehips, juniper berries — add polyphenols and anti-inflammatory compounds.
The not-so-good stuff
Price is the real caveat. Orijen Puppy runs roughly 2–3× mainstream puppy kibble prices. For a 70-lb adult-projected puppy eating 3–4 cups/day for 12 months, the cost delta vs a B/78 formula like Blue Buffalo Puppy can exceed $1,000 over puppyhood. If budget is a constraint, other A- and B-tier formulas deliver solid nutrition at roughly half the price point — diminishing returns kick in quickly above the B tier.
The legume load (red lentils, pinto beans, navy beans, green lentils, chickpeas, peas) is substantial. Orijen's total legume inclusion is lower than many grain-free puppy brands because the meat content is so high, but it's still a factor in the ongoing FDA DCM investigation. Orijen adds supplemental taurine to address the most plausible mechanism, but owners of goldens, cockers, Dobermans, and Great Danes should discuss grain-free choices with their vet before long-term commitment.
Large-breed puppies need attention to calcium. Orijen Puppy is labeled for all life stages, but the natural calcium levels from the heavy meat/bone content put it closer to 1.4% dry matter. Large-breed puppies (projected adult weight 50–100 lb) and giant-breed puppies (100+ lb) need calcium below 1.8% with a controlled calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. Orijen publishes detailed analytical data — review it with your vet before feeding Orijen Puppy to a Great Dane or Mastiff puppy.
How it compares
Orijen Puppy's A/90 grade ties Orijen adult (A/90), Nulo adult (A/90), Stella & Chewy's (A/90), and Wellness CORE (A/90). These four A-tier formulas represent the top of the commercial dry kibble market.
Against mainstream puppy competitors, Orijen Puppy sits well ahead. TOTW High Prairie Puppy (B/78) trails by 12 points on protein density and legume load. Blue Buffalo Life Protection Puppy (B/78) has more grain/plant content. Hill's Science Diet Puppy (C/58) relies on corn and wheat and trails by 32 points.

Who should choose Orijen Puppy
Orijen Puppy is the right choice for puppies whose owners prioritize biologically appropriate nutrition and are willing to absorb the premium price point — the ingredient deck simply isn't matched in the C/D/F tiers. It's especially suited to working breeds, performance breeds, and puppies with known protein tolerances. Small-breed puppies (projected adult 0–20 lb) and medium-breed puppies (20–50 lb) are the cleanest fit. Large-breed (50–100 lb) and giant-breed (100+ lb) puppy owners should verify calcium levels with their vet — ask specifically about the label's Ca% and Ca:P ratio before committing. For DCM-susceptible breeds (goldens, cockers, Dobermans, Great Danes), discuss grain-free feeding with your vet before long-term use.
The bottom line
Orijen Puppy earns an A grade (90/100) from KibbleIQ. Five fresh animal ingredients lead the list, WholePrey ratios deliver bioavailable calcium and trace minerals, DHA-rich fish oil supports brain development, and five-strain probiotics back gut health. The price is real, the legume load warrants attention for DCM-susceptible breeds, and large-breed puppies need vet input on calcium. For puppies whose owners want the cleanest commercial formula available, it's hard to find better on the shelf. Shop on Amazon →
