We analyzed Merrick Purrfect Bistro Grain Free Chicken & Sweet Potato Recipe (reformulated in 2026; sold before as Purrfect Bistro Grain Free Healthy Adult Real Chicken Recipe). The first ingredients are chicken, chicken meal, cassava root flour, potato protein, and dried yeast.

The good stuff
Dried chicory root is a prebiotic fiber source that feeds beneficial gut bacteria. Cats are prone to digestive issues, and prebiotic support helps maintain healthy intestinal flora without the need for probiotic supplements.
The grain-free formula avoids the corn, wheat, and soy that dominate budget cat foods. Natural preservation throughout — no BHA, BHT, artificial colors, or artificial flavors. Merrick has been making pet food since 1988, and their quality control infrastructure is solid.
The not-so-good stuff
Cassava root flour at #3 means carbohydrate content is significant.
