What's actually in Earthborn Holistic?
We analyzed Earthborn Holistic Primitive Natural, the brand's flagship grain-free recipe. The first five ingredients are turkey meal, chicken meal, tapioca, chicken fat, and sweet potato.
Two named meat meals in the first two slots is a strong start. Meals are roughly three times more protein-dense than fresh meat because the water weight has been removed — so "turkey meal" on a label represents far more actual protein than "deboned turkey" would. The formula then adds salmon meal, Alaska pollock meal, and whiting meal further down the list, giving you four distinct named fish sources for omega-3s. The good stuff
The protein strategy is the clearest strength. Turkey meal, chicken meal, salmon meal, Alaska pollock meal, and whiting meal between them cover poultry and fish with zero generic "meat and bone meal" or by-product meal in sight. Turkey meal and chicken meal are also listed as natural sources of glucosamine and chondroitin, which support joint health in aging and large-breed dogs.
Sweet potato and pumpkin (positions five and six) are meaningfully better carb sources than the pea-protein stacks common in grain-free food. They deliver real micronutrients — beta-carotene, vitamin C, fiber — and digest cleanly. Dried chicory root further down the list adds inulin, a prebiotic fiber that feeds gut bacteria. The recipe includes taurine and L-carnitine at meaningful levels, plus three named probiotic strains (Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus).
Preservation is clean: mixed tocopherols (vitamin E) and rosemary extract — no BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin anywhere in the ingredient list.
The not-so-good stuff
Tapioca at position three is essentially pure starch. It's gluten-free and hypoallergenic, but it's also high-glycemic and contributes minimal nutrients beyond calories. In a grain-free kibble you need something to hold the kibble together — tapioca plays that role here, but it's the biggest reason this formula doesn't push into A territory.
Dried yeast appears as a significant ingredient. It's a decent source of B-vitamins and flavor, but some dogs are sensitive to yeast and it's a known trigger for ear infections in susceptible animals.
Midwestern Pet Foods, Earthborn's parent company, had a 2021 recall for aflatoxin contamination that prompted significant product withdrawals across several of its brands (Sportmix, Pro Pac, Splash, and Nunn Better, though Earthborn Holistic was not on the recall list). No manufacturer is recall-proof, but the incident is worth knowing about when choosing where your dog's food comes from.
One smaller gripe: every protein in Primitive Natural is in meal form. There's no fresh deboned meat to anchor the first ingredient the way Acana or Orijen do. That's a price-point reality — you get more total protein per dollar with meals — but it's why Earthborn doesn't crack the A tier.

Earthborn Holistic's B (77/100) puts it in a dense tier alongside Blue Buffalo (B/78), Taste of the Wild (B/78), and Nutro (B/77). All four occupy the same "good but not exceptional" slot for shoppers who want better than mainstream kibble without paying Orijen-tier prices.
Earthborn's differentiators are (1) grain-free without legume stacking — a real advantage if you're DCM-conscious — and (2) four named fish meals driving omega-3 content higher than most competitors in its price range. Fromm (B/84) and Acana (B/88) are clear step-ups with fresher meats and deeper superfood inclusions, but they cost meaningfully more per pound.
