What's actually in 4Health?
We analyzed 4Health Adult Salmon & Potato Formula Grain-Free, one of the more popular products in Tractor Supply's house brand lineup. The first five ingredients are salmon, salmon meal, potatoes, peas, and potato starch.
Starting with whole salmon is a good sign — it's a named, quality animal protein. Salmon meal in the second position is even better in terms of protein density, since the water has already been removed (roughly 3x the protein of whole salmon by weight). The good stuff
The double salmon foundation is the standout here. Whole salmon provides quality protein and natural omega-3 fatty acids, while salmon meal concentrates that protein further. You're getting meaningful animal protein before the formula shifts to starches and fillers.
The omega-3 profile gets a second boost from flaxseed and fish oil later in the list. That's two plant-based and two animal-based omega-3 sources total — a combination that supports coat health, skin condition, and joint function. Many brands at this price tier offer zero dedicated omega-3 ingredients beyond what's naturally in the meat.
Chicken fat preserved with mixed tocopherols is worth highlighting. Mixed tocopherols are a natural form of vitamin E used as a preservative — a clear step above the artificial preservatives (BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin) that show up in lower-tier foods. The taurine addition is also a thoughtful inclusion, particularly for a grain-free formula where taurine deficiency has been a concern.
The not-so-good stuff
The carbohydrate situation is where 4Health loses points. Potatoes and potato starch both appear in the top five — that's essentially the same ingredient showing up twice under different names, a tactic that spreads out starch content so no single carb entry looks too dominant. Combined with peas in the fourth position, the starch-to-protein ratio is heavier than the first two ingredients suggest.
There are no named fruits or vegetables anywhere in the formula. Tomato pomace is technically plant-derived, but it's a by-product of tomato processing — essentially the leftover skins and seeds after the juice is extracted. It provides some fiber, but it's not the same as having blueberries, cranberries, or sweet potatoes on the list.
The formula also lacks prebiotics, probiotics, and chelated minerals — three categories that separate good foods from great ones. Chelated minerals (minerals bound to amino acids for better absorption) are becoming standard in B-tier and above foods. Their absence here is a clear cost-cutting measure. And as a grain-free formula, 4Health falls into the ongoing FDA investigation into a potential link between grain-free diets and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs — something worth discussing with your vet.
How it compares
4Health's C grade (70/100) puts it in the same tier as Purina ONE (C/58), but with a meaningfully higher score. The difference is ingredient quality — 4Health leads with real salmon protein while Purina ONE leads with chicken by-product meal.
It falls short of the B-tier budget favorites like Kirkland Signature (B/78), Diamond Naturals (B/78), and Taste of the Wild (B/78). Those formulas earn their higher grades by including things 4Health skips — chelated minerals, named fruits and vegetables, and prebiotic fiber sources. If you're shopping at Tractor Supply on a budget, 4Health is a respectable choice. But if you can stretch to a B-tier food, you'll get noticeably more nutritional depth.
