What to Look for in Food for a Yorkie with a Sensitive Stomach
Diagnostic workup before chronic dietary management. Yorkies have multiple breed-specific risks that overlap with “sensitive stomach” presentation. Per Center 2017, Yorkies have substantially elevated congenital portosystemic shunt (PSS) rate — bile-acid testing pre/post meal is the screening test. Per Watson 2010, small breeds are over-represented in pancreatitis case series — cPLI (canine pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity) is the diagnostic. Per the ACVIM 2023 chronic enteropathy consensus, serum cobalamin and folate plus fecal screening rules out malabsorption. Don’t skip the diagnostic step; many chronic-GI Yorkies have an underlying diagnosable condition.
Frequent small meals prevent hypoglycemia. Per the AAHA 2022 hypoglycemia management guidelines, toy-breed dogs (under 10 lbs adult body weight) have limited hepatic glycogen reserves and adrenal gluconeogenic capacity, making them vulnerable to hypoglycemia after fasting periods of 6–8 hours or more.
